How to Renew a Spanish Driving Licence in 2026: Medical Check, Documents, Fees and Temporary Permit

Updated 25 September 2026. If you search for "renew Spanish driving licence" in 2026, the ordinary process is usually simpler than it first appears. This guide covers a standard Spanish-issued licence, not the exchange of a foreign licence or a duplicate after loss or theft.

You can apply during the three months before the expiry date. Applying early does not remove any remaining validity: the new period starts when the old licence expires. If the licence has already expired, you can still renew it, but you cannot drive until the renewal has been completed.

When to start a Spanish driving licence renewal

The safest time to start a Spanish driving licence renewal is within the final three months before expiry. The DGT does not require a new theory or practical driving test for an ordinary renewal. You need to pass the required psychophysical assessment instead.

The validity period depends on your age and licence category. I have kept the age-specific periods out of this general guide because they are easy to confuse with the rest of the process. For the rules that apply to drivers over 65, 70 and 80, see our guide to renewing a Spanish driving licence at 70 and over.

Use an authorised Driver Recognition Centre for the medical check

For many drivers, the most direct route for DGT licence renewal Spain is an authorised Centro de Reconocimiento de Conductores, or CRC. The DGT says these centres can carry out the psychophysical assessment and manage the complete renewal. The centre can also take the photograph and give you the provisional permit after the application is processed.

The assessment is often called a psicotécnico. It is the required medical test for a driving licence in Spain, not a repeat of your driving lessons. The DGT describes the authorised centres as places for the physical, mental and coordination checks needed to obtain or renew a licence. The exact assessment and any conditions on the renewed licence depend on the medical result.

Use the DGT's official CRC finder rather than assuming that any private clinic can submit a renewal. Before booking, ask the centre what it wants you to bring and whether it will complete the DGT filing for you.

Documents and renewal channels

For a renewal at an authorised CRC, the DGT lists original, valid identity and residence documents. Depending on your status, that may be a DNI or passport, an EU identity or residence document, or a valid residence authorisation for a non-EU resident. The centre issues the psychophysical fitness report and can complete the photograph and application there.

You can also renew through the DGT. The electronic route uses the DGT electronic renewal service and requires a DNIe, a valid electronic certificate or Cl@ve. You first obtain the report from an authorised CRC, pay the applicable traffic fee and attach the requested documents. The DGT says the medical fitness report is valid for 90 business days.

A third option is a DGT traffic office. Check the office instructions and request an appointment before going unless the DGT confirms that an exception applies to your situation. The DGT's renewal page also explains the form, identity and residence evidence for this route.

Spanish driving licence renewal fees in 2026: the standard DGT traffic fee for renewal is fee 4.3, currently €24.58. This is separate from the CRC's medical and processing charge, which the DGT sources do not set. Check the centre's own price when you book.

The DGT states that the renewal is free of the traffic fee for drivers over 70. If a medical decision gives the licence a shorter validity period, the DGT lists reduced fees:

  • Up to four years: €19.67.
  • Up to three years: €14.75.
  • Up to two years: €9.83.
  • Up to one year: €4.92.

These are the Spanish driving licence renewal fees charged by the DGT. They do not remove the separate charge for the medical assessment or any service provided by the CRC.

Temporary permit, expired licences and practical limits

Once the renewal is processed, the CRC gives you a provisional permit. This temporary driving permit in Spain lets you drive inside Spain for up to six months while you wait for the definitive card. It is not valid for driving abroad, so do not plan an international trip around the provisional document.

The DGT says the definitive licence normally arrives at your home in about a month and a half. If it does not arrive after a reasonable period, contact the CRC that handled the renewal so it can report the problem and check what happened.

If your licence is expired, you may still renew an expired driving licence in Spain, but the expiry means you cannot drive until the renewal is complete. Booking an appointment does not make an expired licence valid. A standard renewal is also not the solution if you have lost all your points. In that situation, the DGT says you must follow the relevant recovery process first.

Before you book, confirm that your document is a Spanish-issued licence. A foreign EU or EEA licence that needs renewal follows a different DGT procedure, and a lost or stolen licence normally involves a duplicate process rather than a standard renewal.

Questions and quick checklist

How early can I renew a Spanish driving licence?

You can apply during the three months before the expiry date. Renewing early does not remove any remaining validity from your current licence.

Do I need to retake the theory or practical driving test?

No. A standard renewal requires the psychophysical assessment at an authorised CRC. The ordinary renewal route does not require a new theory or practical test.

Can I use the provisional permit outside Spain?

No. The provisional permit allows you to drive in Spain for up to six months while the definitive licence is issued. It is not valid for driving abroad.

What happens if my licence has already expired?

You can still apply for renewal, but you must not drive while the licence is expired. An appointment booking does not make an expired licence valid.

What if I have lost all my driving points?

A standard renewal will not restore a licence that has lost all its points. The DGT says you must follow the relevant points-recovery process instead.

Check the expiry date, start within three months if possible, find an authorised CRC and take valid identity and residence documents. Ask whether the centre will submit the renewal, confirm its separate medical charge, and keep the provisional permit with you while driving in Spain.
