What changes after age 65 is the maximum validity period: most car and motorcycle licences are renewed for up to five years, while professional licences are renewed for up to three years.
This guide explains how to renew a Spanish driving licence at 65, 70 or over 80, what the medical check involves, what you pay, and where your provisional licence is valid.
Spanish driving licence renewal after 65: the quick answer
- No maximum driving age: there is no rule requiring you to stop driving simply because you reach a particular birthday.
- Ordinary licences: AM, A1, A2, A and B licences can normally be renewed for up to five years from age 65.
- Professional licences: C, C1, D, D1 and related professional categories can normally be renewed for up to three years from age 65.
- No routine theory or road test: a standard renewal requires a medical and psychophysical fitness assessment.
- Age 70 and over: the DGT renewal fee is waived, although you still pay the medical centre's fee.
- Apply early: you may renew during the three months before expiry without losing remaining validity.
The DGT can issue a licence for less than five or three years when a health condition needs closer monitoring. That is an individual medical decision, not an automatic penalty for age.
How often do drivers over 65 renew in Spain?

These are maximum periods. A doctor may recommend a shorter renewal when an illness or impairment could worsen. The DGT says the medical criteria are the same at every age; older drivers are checked more often because their licences have shorter validity.
How to renew a Spanish driving licence at 70 or over
- Check the expiry date. You can begin up to three months before it expires. If it has already expired, you may still renew it, but you cannot legally drive until the renewal is completed.
- Choose an authorised Driver Recognition Centre. In Spanish this is a Centro de Reconocimiento de Conductores, often shortened to CRC. Use the DGT's official centre finder rather than assuming any private medical clinic can process the renewal.
- Complete the medical and psychophysical assessment. The centre checks whether you meet the fitness standards for safe driving.
- Let the centre submit the renewal. An authorised CRC can normally take your photograph, collect the applicable fees and send the application to the DGT electronically.
- Take the provisional licence. The centre should give you a temporary permit while the permanent card is produced.
The DGT says the permanent licence normally arrives at your registered address in about six weeks. If it does not arrive after a reasonable period, contact the medical centre that processed the renewal so it can report the incident.
What to take to the medical centre
Confirm the centre's requirements when booking, but it is sensible to bring:
- your current Spanish driving licence;
- a valid DNI, NIE/TIE with passport, or other identity document the centre accepts;
- your glasses, contact lenses or hearing aids if you use them for driving;
- recent medical reports or a medication list when a condition may affect driving;
- a payment method accepted by the centre.

What happens in the medical check?
The assessment is commonly called the psicotécnico. It normally covers vision, hearing, coordination, reaction and relevant medical history. Bring supporting information if you have a condition affecting your sight, heart, nervous system, mobility, cognition, sleep or medication.
You do not routinely retake the driving theory or practical test simply because you are 70 or 80. The possible outcomes are:
- renewal for the normal maximum period;
- renewal for a shorter period so your health can be reviewed sooner;
- renewal with restrictions or adaptations recorded on the licence;
- further medical evidence being requested;
- renewal being refused when the required fitness standard is not met.
Ask the centre to explain any restriction or shorter validity period before you leave.
How much does renewal cost in 2026?
For a standard renewal, the DGT lists traffic fee 4.3 at €24.58. The medical centre charges separately for the assessment and processing, and its price varies by centre.
If you are 70 or older, you do not pay the DGT traffic fee for renewal. You still pay the CRC for the medical assessment and its service. When a medical condition results in a shorter licence period, the applicable DGT fee may also be reduced.

Can you drive while waiting for the new licence?
Yes, once the renewal is processed, the provisional permit allows you to drive for up to six months inside Spain. It is not valid for driving abroad. If you need to travel, plan the renewal early enough to receive the permanent card before you cross the border or rent a car outside Spain.
If your old licence has expired and you have not yet completed the renewal, you cannot drive merely because an appointment is booked.

Do I have to stop driving at 70 or 80 in Spain?
No. Spain has no fixed upper age limit. You may continue while you meet the medical and psychophysical requirements and keep the licence valid.
